BASIC INFO:
Name: Rubeus Hagrid
Age: 69
Birthday: December 6
House: Gryffindor
Rubeus Hagrid, better known simply as Hagrid, is one of the most popular characters in the Harry Potter series. A half-human, half-giant, Hagrid is about twice the size of a normal man. The son of the giantess Fridwulfa, Hagrid found out that he has a half-brother, Grawp, when he went to make contact with the few giants remaining in the world.
Hagrid was a student at Hogwarts many years ago. His affinity for magical creatures led to his expulsion from Hogwarts. He was keeping Aragog, a giant spider, in a room in the basement during the first opening of the Chamber of Secrets. Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort) found out about Aragog and turned Hagrid in to school officials. Tom got away with murdering a student, and Hagrid was expelled.
Dumbledore, however, never believed that Hagrid was gulity. He hired Hagrid as gamekeeper, later promoting him to Keeper of Grounds and Keys and to the position of professor for Care of Magical Creatures classes. Dumbledore has great faith in Hagrid. In Sorcerer's Stone, we saw how he trusted him with two very important things. We first met Hagrid when he came roaring up to the Dursley's house on a flying motorcylce with baby Harry. He had rescued him after his parents' murder and delivered him safely to McGonagall and Dumbledore. When McGonagall expressed doubt in Hagrid, Dumbledore told her he would trust Hagrid with his life. Hagrid was also in charge of retrieving the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringott's Bank and bringing it to Hogwarts for safe keeping.
As mentioned above, Hagrid has great interest in magical creatures. Since we met him, he has tried to raise a dragon, brought Nifflers and Blast-ended Skrewts to class, and befriended a hippogriff. Hagrid may look rough and burly on the outside, but when it comes to creatures, he's just a big softy. He especially loves dragons - in fact, his first "date" with Madame Maxime was to show her the dragons to be used for the TriWizard Tournament.
Hagrid has proven to be a true friend to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. At the end of the first book he presents Harry with a photo album full of pictures of his parents that Hagrid had collected over the school year. When Malfoy called Hermione a mudblood, Hagrid cheers her up by telling her there isn't a spell she can't do. He has provided guidance and a shoulder to lean on for them since they first arrived.
At first glance, Hagrid seems to be just a cheerful, animal-loving guy. But on closer inspection, you can see just how complex he is. He goes on secret missions for Dumbledore and is trusted with secrets no one else will ever know about. He protects and teaches the Hogwarts students. He has an immense knowledge of all creatures, human and non. But perhaps Hagrid's greatest trait is his loyalty - to Harry, Hogwarts, Dumbledore and the good fight.
