When someone is helping you, mainly a store clerk, do NOT be on the phone in front of them. This is rude and belittling to the person who is waiting on you.

Yeah, I love that - when I'm on the way to work, in a hurry, and the clerk is talking on his/her phone instead of letting me pay for my gas. GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Gotta love the people in front of you on the road going 40 miles under the speed limit, swerving around everywhere because they are on their phone too.

I completely agree on the issue of talking on cell phones while driving. The ones that really scare me are the ones who don't slow down. There are also the ones who aren't paying attention to the fact that their turn is coming up and they suddenly jump in front of you and hit their brakes hard to make their turn. I was once sitting at a light behind a woman who was talking on her phone. The light changed and she sat there. After about 10 seconds I hit my horn to get her to move. She looked at me over her shoulder, began saying something and showed me her phone so that I could see that she was busy talking. Sorry lady, don't let being a good, safe driver get in the way of your conversation!

As a waitress, I have to say that I hate it when I go over to take someone's order and they're on the cell phone and ignore me, or hold up a finger to tell me to wait, like I don't have four hundred other things to be doing. I mean, if you want to order, order. That's why you go to a restaurant right, not to talk on the phone....

I agree with ya'll. Being rude to waitresses and clerks is HORRIBLE. I had a student call me and she wanted some advice on what to wear for a big meeting. The clerk was waiting on her and I could hear two conversations. I said "This is rude to the clerk. I am hanging up on you!" I did. She knew I had been in Retail early on in life so she didn't mind. Plus we know each other on a personal level anyway.
Driving and talking causes more accidents than eating, fiddling with the radio etc. I heard a trooper talking about this. I have done it in the past, but don't now. If I have to talk, I'll pull over. It just isn't all that important. I lived without one for this long. I am sure I can wait til I get to my destination to chit chat!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves ever! I get on my best friend so much for this, she'll drive on her phone, AND be constantly on it when at shops or restaurants. As a retail clerk, I wish sometimes that I could just refuse to wait on someone when they're talking on their phone, but the customer is always right. It's still incredibly rude to the people that are trying to help you, and the person you're taling to on the phone as well because you aren't giving them the full attention they deserve either. Cell phones are great, but for the love of Pete it is possible to call someone back when you're not doing something else!

I admit I've been behind the wheel a few times with the cell to the ear, but I'm at a red light that I know will take a while to change, usually letting my family know I'm going to be delayed, and the moment the light changes, or gets close to changing, I tell them I have to go.
What scares me is when someone is tailgating me going through a town and they have a cell to their ear. More than once, I've had to suddenly slam on my breaks to avoid hitting someone and if the driver behind me is on the phone, they may not be able to stop in time not to hit me.
A co-worker of mine had a fun habit of putting pictures of interesting signs on his cubicle wall. One was a sign up along the freeways with a number to call to report people talking on the phone while driving. Seems to me, and him, something like that would cause more problem, unless it is only the passenger who dials to report it.
I'd also seen bumper stickers that say "Hang up and drive!"
I also agree that it's common curtesy not to be on the phone while at the checkout of a store, or a restaurant when the order is going to be placed. It's also annoying when I'm at a movie, and someone's cell is sounding. A couple of times, they would actually answer and get talking on it, right in the middle of the show! I mean, come on people! Use what God put between the ears and think!
Before I went on my recent trip, I went to the post office to put a hold on my mail, and my husband called as it was my turn. I handed in the slip, telling him and the USPS worker that I was getting a hold on my mail. I normally don't do things like that, but I could tell both people the same thing and satisfy them both at the same time. That actually is the first time I was being helped and on the phone, and I did not like doing that. It's akward for me to do that. I'll never do it again if I can help it.
I had just had a customer call here at work, and right at the end of the call, her cell phone went off, loudly in my ear! I know she can't help when people call her, but still...

I have found the perfect way for me to avoid bothering anyone with my cell phone... I don't have one I have phone phobia anyway and if I had a cell phone, I'd have a nervous breakdown

You´re absolutely right, if you´re standing in line or sitting in a restaurant you shouldn´t pull up a cell phone. It´s okay if you´re not close to the end of the line or if you already ordered, but otherwise it´s just rude... The waiters or the waitresses, or the store clerks are just trying to do their job (at a shitty paycheck I might add) so if you start talking on your cell phone you´re just saying that you´re more important than them or the other customers. One other example is to start talking on your cell phone when you´re sitting in a movie theater. Now, that´s irritating! And those who do that always follow the same rule it seems. They talk as loud as they can as if we (the other movie goers) actually want to listen to their conversation! The last time that happened I actually took the guys cell phone away, took out the SIM card and handed it to him, and tossed the cell phone towards the back of the theater (it was a half packed theater with all the people in the front). I know it might seem overkill, but the last five minutes he had described the movie plot in great detail, including the coming events in the movie. I was just fed up! Sorry for ranting, guys.

It serves him right for talking like that, loudly on a cell phone. It's bad enough someone telling another person in the theater the plot and how it ends, without it being someone on the phone. At least it's not a huge problem in my area. The cell phone part, anyway. There's a reminder in all the theaters to turn them off. As my sister once said, it's just curmon cotesy. (She meant to say common curtesy, but it came out wrong.) It is a good solution to the cell problem to not have one. At least that does not add to the problem. I don't even turn mine on most of the time. Only after work for about a half hour while I'm on my way home. And normally, it's just to call home to let them know I'm on my way.

Well, to tell the truth, I don't know how I would survive without my cell phone, but I rarely talk on it....I am a text person myself. I work in retail and I do respect the customer by not answering my cell while I am with them. I let it ring and I can call whoever back later. My boss on the other hand, will be helping someone and if his phone rings he will just walk away and answer it, leaving the customer hanging. This is very bad for PR, but I only work there. Another pet peeve, concerning phones, at our store, when the phone rings we are expected to drop everything and answer it. I don't though, cause, if I am with a customer I believe they should be first priority over the phone. They are there in person for assistance...the person on the phone calling for a price on a $0.05 bolt can wait or drive down and come in and see for theirselves. And that's all I've got to say about that.

Hee hee... Yeah, Qapollo never talks on his phone. Except when he came to visit me the other day and sat on my couch and took two phone calls.
Couldn't resist.
