OK here is an idea for a thread that I've had for awhile now... What animals that really do exist would make the best fantasy creatures?
Just list an animal and what you think makes it fantasticalThe first one that always comes to mind for me is the Narwhal - the unicorn of the sea. Medevil Europeans actually believed that the Narwhal's long teeth were the horns of unicorns. The Narwhal is also known as "The Moon Whale".

Butterflies would make great fantasy creatures. From their fairylike grace and colorful beauty to their magical transformation - everything about a butterfly fits.

How about the platypus? That animal is so messed up, it may as well have been made up. I mean, come on. A mammal that has the beak of a duck, tail of a beaver, lays eggs, and produces milk for it's young. When someone took it in dead as proof of its existance, they looked for the seams. Nobody really believed in them until they saw one alive and moving.

^ The Platypus definitely qualifies! I think Giraffes would make great fantasy critters too. They look like something straight out of Narnia, with those sprawling sticks for legs and the speckledly long necks.
