We'll be serious about this story. Each poster has to write at least a paragraph. I'm not saying there can't be humor but lets make a real short story out of this thread. We will wrap the story up at post 100. I'll put all the posts together and place it in the fiction section with credit to all that posted. Science fiction or fantasy theme please... here goes.
Chase felt July's warm breath on his face as his bike raced down Depot Hill. Pulling along side the old locust fence he slung his backpack on the ground and plopped down beside it in the grass. Chase loved the night; the lack of a crowd and that feeling that the world was all his. And he loved trains. Which is why he spent many nights here beside the tracks. But on this night as he stared up the rails waiting for the engine light to appear around the bend... he saw something else.

The crickets that had been noisily chirping around him were suddenly silent. Chase felt a chill run down his spine as he looked up the track. There was definitely a light up there but it wasn't a train. The orange glow looked like it was coming from right around the bend. It was the right height for a train, but this light wasn't moving. It was pulsing, almost dying out then slowly growing brighter again and again. Sweat slid down his neck as he pondered his next move.

Just across the county line, sheriff Pat Burgess went to sip his coffee. As he raised the long needed caffine to his mouth he felt a slight tremor, just enough to cause a drop of his Folgers to run down the side of his mug onto his thumb. "Sheriff" his deputy Bill said from behind him, "you have a call sir." A taste of coffee in his mind but not on his lips, Pat Burgess got up from his desk to take the phone call that would change his life.

Sheriff Burgess walked into his office and picked up the phone. The voice on the other end was as familiar as his own. After twenty-two years of marriage, Annie was still his best friend. He smiled. "Slow down, hon. Now what's going on?" As he listened to her frantic voice, his smile faded and he leaned over his desk and started taking notes. "What time was this, Annie? Uh-huh. Okay. I'll get over there in a minute." He hung up the phone then called the deputy in. "Bill, Annie's real spooked about something. Said she heard something on the track, thought it was the train comin' through, but she never saw nothing. I told her I'd take a look at it, so I'm leaving you in charge here."

Chase was sure he was standing in the exact spot he'd seen the light. Nothing. Above him, around him, on the ground under his feet... nothing. As he leaned to grab his bike there was a sound from the bushes behind him. "Whoosh" like a flyswatter swung too fast. He whirled around to find more nothing. Then "whoosh!" this time he thought he thought he could see a tiny bit of motion. Then he saw it. "It... it is nothing," Chase stammered aloud as he backed away and fell over his bike. For the object in front of him was like dark on black, hovering in the night.

The figure stood tall before Chase. His hands trembled and his eyes bulged out as his jaw hit the floor. He slowly crept away but he couldn't avert his gaze from the thing that loomed there. It was still, even without a single sign of breath. He could not see any eyes on the creature but a terrible chill drowned his body as he felt the thing was fixated on him. Time stood still as Chase's heart raced a thousand beats per second. He inched away a little more and the creature took a step forward toward him.

The familiar sound of tires on gravel pulled Chase from his trance. The lights from a patrol car blinded him as he looked back. He ran as hard as he could until he collided frantically with Pat, who grabbed him to keep them both from falling over. "What in tarnation is that?" the sherriff screeched as they watched the dark entity seem to fluctuate in car lights. Then it was gone...

"Boy, explain yourself! What was that?" He looked around in every direction unable to comprehend what had just happened. He stuttered, "I--don't---what---I." He helped him off his feet and patted the dirt off his shoulders and sleeves. He took at glance at his hands and noticed something peculiar. "Huh...what's this?" Chase looked at his hand and right on his palm was a big black spot he couldn't rub out. He looked around with terrible fear slithering through his bones. "It's almost as if you've been marked, boy."
